Carefully restructured to address the needs of a wider range of students as they progress through Stages 4 and 5

Building understanding questions follow on from the Key Ideas in Years 7&8 and Years 9&10 Core & Advanced / Extension Paths courses to promote class discussion and consolidate skills before students attempt the exercise questions. Stronger students can move straight to the Worked Examples and the Fluency section.

Now you try questions follow the Worked Examples to provide immediate practice with the same type of question before students start the exercises. These questions do not have worked solutions and can also be used by teachers as in-class demonstration.
The gradient of difficulty in exercises has been revised to increase every student’s opportunity for success as they work through questions that gradually progress from simple to more complex.
Hint boxes and Worked Examples placed within exercises in the Stage 5 Core & Standard Paths resources provide vital additional support for less advanced students.
Two separate working programs and careful curation and labelling of references to Advanced/Extension content in the Core & Standard Paths books ensure that students have the flexibility to move between pathways and to prepare for the Stage 6 course they choose.

New Working Mathematically investigative tasks

Working Mathematically investigative tasks for every chapter provide opportunities for students to apply and consolidate their learning through open-ended and exploratory tasks. Solving routine and non-routine problems through these tasks prepares students for the investigative-style assignments required in Stage 6. Statistical Investigations will also be provided for chapters on Statistics.

New tools to help students keep track of their progress

Learning Intentions at the beginning of each lesson clearly state what the student can expect to achieve. Future learning is also indicated where the section content relates to concepts to be addressed at a later stage.
A Success Criteria checklist – including example questions – at the end of each chapter allows students to tick off what they have learnt and provides a quick revision tool.
New progress quizzes in the Years 7 & 8 and Core & Advanced/Extension Paths books give students extra practice as they work through the sections.

Complete and authoritative coverage of the new syllabus

New content, such as Networks, Infographics and Simulation in Stage 5, is delivered in a logical and manageable way to encourage deep understanding.

This content is supported by carefully graded questions, linked examples and new Working Mathematically investigative tasks in an uncluttered layout.

Syllabus references are included with the Learning Intentions for each section, along with Key Terms and Key Ideas, so that teachers can link content to the syllabus to be sure they are covering all required outcomes.

Careful consideration has been given to supporting the delivery of flexible Pathways in Stage 5, and includes clear labelling of optional Advanced content in Core & Standard Paths, references to other Path material not covered in a particular course, access to other Cambridge HOTmaths learning materials and discrete working programs throughout each course.

Additional support for building core maths skills

New targeted skillsheets are included for every section and focus on a single skill or small set of closely-related skills. Each skillsheet includes between eight and ten questions, with a related worked example from the textbook listed for each question. One optional problem-solving question is also included.

Fluency questions have been restructured to give students more opportunities to embed core skills before attempting harder questions, ensuring a greater chance of success as the questions increase in complexity.

New projectable lesson summaries for each section

A NEW set of PowerPoint documents for classroom presentation include the Lesson Starter, Key Ideas, Building Understanding questions (for Stage 4 and Stage 5 Core & Advanced/Extension Paths), Worked Examples and Now You Try questions for each section.

Teachers can use these presentations to guide lessons, focus students’ attention and promote class or group discussion before students work on exercise questions
